Designing Complex Mezzanines

Learn how to create larger and more sophisticated mezzanine layouts using multiple interconnected mezzanine sections.

Overview

Not every mezzanine is a simple rectangular platform.

Many commercial and industrial buildings require floor systems that wrap around internal spaces, avoid building features or maximise usable floor area.

Quotec allows you to achieve these layouts by combining multiple mezzanine sections into a single integrated design.

When to Use Multiple Mezzanines

Multiple mezzanine sections are commonly used to create:

  • L-shaped floor layouts

  • U-shaped floor layouts

  • Walkways

  • Office mezzanines

  • Storage platforms around stairwells

  • Multi-level warehouse floor systems

Each section can be positioned and configured independently to suit the design requirements of your building.

Creating an L-Shaped Mezzanine

An L-shaped mezzanine is created by placing two adjoining mezzanine sections.

  1. Create the first mezzanine section.

  2. Configure its dimensions.

  3. Add a second mezzanine.

  4. Position it adjacent to the first section.

  5. Adjust the dimensions until the desired layout is achieved.

Creating a U-Shaped Mezzanine

A U-shaped mezzanine is created by combining three separate mezzanine sections.

Each section can have its own:

  • Width

  • Length

  • Bearer layout

  • Joist layout

  • Floor loading

This allows the mezzanine to follow the building layout while maintaining complete design flexibility.

Combining Multiple Sections

Each mezzanine remains independently configurable after placement.

This allows you to:

  • Extend floor areas

  • Create corridors and walkways

  • Design around stair openings

  • Build around internal rooms

  • Maximise usable floor space

Working Around Building Features

When designing larger mezzanine systems, consider existing building elements such as:

  • Internal walls

  • Partition walls

  • Roller doors

  • Portal frame columns

  • External walls

Positioning mezzanines after these elements have been configured allows Quotec to intelligently integrate each section with the surrounding structure.

Engineering Insight

Large mezzanine systems are often easier to design using several smaller, interconnected sections rather than attempting to create one oversized platform.

This approach provides greater flexibility during design, simplifies future modifications and allows each section to be configured to suit its specific structural requirements.

Best Practice

For complex floor systems, build the design progressively.

Rather than attempting to finalise every dimension immediately:

  1. Position the main mezzanine.

  2. Configure its dimensions.

  3. Add secondary sections.

  4. Review the overall floor layout.

  5. Make final adjustments to each individual section.

This approach generally produces cleaner layouts and reduces unnecessary rework.
