Custom Slab Designs: Requirements, Process, and Pricing Details

What is a Custom Slab Design?

Quotec's standard slab engineering has been developed to accommodate the majority of common building sites and soil conditions.

For most projects, the standard slab and footing designs available through Quotec will be suitable and no additional slab engineering is required.

However, some sites or projects have conditions that fall outside the parameters of the standard engineering. In these circumstances, a Custom Slab Design (CSD) may be required.

A Custom Slab Design allows the engineer to assess the specific site conditions and building requirements and prepare an appropriate slab and footing design for that individual project.

When might a Custom Slab Design be required?

A CSD may be required where the project involves:

  • Highly reactive or unusual soil conditions that fall outside Quotec's standard slab engineering

  • A Class 1a building

  • A building located near or over a sewer, easement or other underground infrastructure

  • Piled or specialised footing requirements

  • Specific edge beam, pier or footing requirements

  • Non-standard slab thicknesses or step-downs

  • Particular load-bearing requirements

  • Other specialised site or construction conditions that cannot be accommodated by the standard slab design

The requirement for a CSD will generally be identified during the engineering process based on the building design, soil classification and/or other information supplied for the site.

Important: A Custom Slab Design relates to the slab and footing design. If changes are required to the building's structural design itself, these may need to be submitted separately as a Custom Design Request.

What information will I need?

The information required will depend on why the Custom Slab Design is being requested.

As a minimum, you should be prepared to provide:

  • Soil test / geotechnical report

  • Floor plan showing the building dimensions and layout

  • Details of any specific slab, footing or site requirements

Additional information may be required for specialised projects.

For example, where a building is proposed near or over a sewer, the engineer will require information identifying the location and depth of the sewer in relation to the proposed building.

The Engineering Team may request further information once the project and supporting documents have been reviewed.

How do I request a Custom Slab Design?

Custom Slab Designs are requested through Quotec's Custom Design Request process.

When submitting your request:

  1. Identify that the request is for a Custom Slab Design.

  2. Include the relevant Quotec Job Number.

  3. Explain why a custom slab is required and provide any known site or design requirements.

  4. Upload the soil test/geotechnical report, floor plan and any other relevant supporting documentation.

  5. Where applicable, provide additional information such as sewer location/depth, piling requirements or other site constraints.

Quotec will review the request and supporting information before referring it to the Engineering Team.

If additional information is required before the design can commence, we will contact you.

Fee and Process

The fee for a Custom Slab Design is $926.00 including GST. To request a Custom Slab Design, submit the project through Quotec’s Custom Design Request process, identifying the request as a Custom Slab Design and providing the relevant supporting documentation, including the soil test/geotechnical report, floor plan and details of any site-specific requirements.

For specialised projects, additional information may be required, such as the location and depth of sewer infrastructure, piling requirements or other site constraints.

Once the required information and authority to proceed have been received, Quotec will refer the request to the Engineering Team for assessment and preparation of the Custom Slab Design.

Pricing a Custom Slab Design

If you regularly quote projects that may require a Custom Slab Design, the applicable cost can be configured within your Pricing Rules.

Go to:

Settings → Company Details → Pricing → Pricing Rules

Pricing Rules control the costs that appear when preparing your customer proposal. They can include predefined Quotec costs as well as your own manual pricing items. A default amount can also be configured where you regularly use the same charge.

For example, you may configure the applicable Class 1a / Custom Slab Design charge so that it can be included when preparing the customer proposal.

For Class 1a jobs, Quotec's Class1A pricing type is automatically added to the job. The amount you charge your customer can be configured as a default amount within Pricing Rules.

You can also determine how the charge is presented on your proposal—for example, as a separate charge or incorporated according to your normal proposal pricing structure.

What happens after I submit the request?

Once Quotec has received the required information:

Request submitted → Documents reviewed → Engineering assessment → Additional information requested (if required) → Custom Slab Design completed

The final design will be specific to the building and the site information supplied.

Do not commence slab, footing or construction works based on assumptions while a Custom Slab Design is being prepared. The final engineering requirements should be available before construction proceeds.
